In 1874, twenty-five members of Salem Lutheran Church, Catonsville, met and organized a new congregation – First Evangelical Lutheran Church. These German families that lived in and around Ellicott City built a place to gather on Church Road and worshipped there for 75 years before deciding that the time had come to expand further to care for a growing membership. In 1953, a building program was established, and they broke ground on Chatham Road in 1955. The stained-glass window seen as you enter the building is the original glass window from the church on Church Road. A further expansion was added onto the Chatham Road church in 1985, with new office space and a new choir room. Finally, in 1995, First Lutheran expanded once again into the beautiful worship space we have today.
