First Lutheran's Stained Glass Windows
First Lutheran's octagonal shaped sanctuary has stained glass windows are located at six of the corners on the ground level. These windows, designed by Calligan Studios, represent passages from Martin Luther's explanation of the third article of the Apostles' Creed in his Small Catechism.

Calling

I believe that I cannot come to my Lord Jesus Christ by my own intelligence or power. But the Holy Spirit calls me by the Gospel - Martin Luther, Small Catechism

The hands in the window represent God reaching out and "calling" us to the Good News of the Gospel.

Enlightenment Through The Holy Spirit

But the Holy Spirit called me by the Gospel, enlightened me with His gifts, made me holy and kept me in the true faith - Martin Luther, Small Catechism

This window contains a dove and tongues of fire, both of which symbolize the Holy Spirit. The dove represents the Holy Spirit present at Jesus' Baptism. The twelve tongues of fire represent the Holy Spirit descending on the Apostles at Pentecost.

God Sanctifies Through The Waters of Baptism

He calls, gathers together, enlightens and makes holy the whole Church on earth and keeps it with Jesus in the one, true faith.
- Martin Luther, Small Catechism

The young woman represents the church, the bride of Christ, while the shell and the water represent baptism. It is through baptism that we are sanctified, that is made holy, and claimed as children of God.

United in the Body and Blood of Christ

In this Church, He generously forgives each day every sin committed by me and by every believer. - Martin Luther, Small Catechism

This window contains the elements of communion. With the breaking of the bread and the drinking of the wine, we are united in the body and blood of Jesus Christ.

Gathers the Lost

He calls, gathers together, enlightens and makes holy the whole Church on earth and keeps it with Jesus in the one, true faith. - Martin Luther, Small Catechism

Scripture is full of stories about being lost. The 15th chapter of Luke contains a number of parables about being lost: the prodigal son, the lost coin, and the good shepherd. It is this last one that is the basis for this stained glass window.

Raises and Gives Eternal Life

On the last day, He will raise me and all the dead from the grave. He will give eternal life to me and to all who believe in Christ. - Martin Luther, Small Catechism

This window symbolizes Christ standing in the heavens with hands outstretched to welcome us into eternal life.
